A Moroccan migrant had died Wednesday evening attempting to illegally enter the Miral migrant camp in Bosnia's north-western town of Velika Kladusa, Una-Sana Police and cantonal Prosecution said on Thursday.

“Around midnight, Miral security guards informed the on-duty team at the Velika Kladusa Police Station that they found a lifeless body during a regular tour of the area around the camp. It was established that the person tried to enter the camp illegally and that he accidentally lost his life while crawling through the fence. The cause of death was most likely strangulation,” said the head of the Una-Sana Canton Criminal Police Department, Snjezana Galic.

The cantonal Prosecution identified the migrant as a Moroccan citizen.

“The deceased was subsequently identified, and another migrant confirmed that he was a 28-year-old Moroccan citizen. The prosecution immediately informed the Moroccan Embassy in Bosnia and indirectly the family of the victim of this unfortunate incident,” said cantonal Prosecutor Irena Marjanovic-Cavkic.

Since the beginning of the migrant crisis, after some EU countries imposed a hard border, a new, Balkan route was formed and it went through Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina to Croatia – the first EU member state on it.

Following Croatia's re-enforcements of the border with Bosnia, cities of Bihac and Velika Kladusa found themselves in the centre of the crisis because all the migrants coming into the country from Serbia flocked to these two towns, hoping to cross the border through what they call “the game.”

The game is when dozens of migrants try to overwhelm the Croatian Border Police, making room for some of them to cross into Croatia. Several thousand migrants currently reside in several camps built near these two towns in an attempt to get them off the street and help the local authorities in providing for their basic needs.
