Heavy rainfall has caused rivers and creeks in Bosnia to swell and flood houses and roads along their banks, forcing many to fear for their lives and properties.
Traffic has been stopped on the main road connecting the northern city of Tuzla with Sarajevo to the south and Orasje to the north while the city’s connection to the northwestern town of Doboj is also jeopardized.
If water closes down that road, residents of Tuzla will only have one direction to go – northeast toward Bijeljina and Zvornik.
Floods have caused worries in the town of Kladanj, where authorities have declared a state of natural disaster after the water spilt over its banks and flooded about 50 houses. The stream is threatening several bridges and the local primary school.
In the town of Srebrenik, the water entered the post office, a small clinic and several other objects in the Spionica neighbourhood, as well as a significant agricultural area.
Authorities have warned the residents to stay alert and watch for landslides, which have already endangered local roads and people’s houses throughout the northeast of the country.
The crisis situations coordinator in the northern city of Brcko, Mirsad Hasanbasic, told the FENA agency that residents of several villages near the Majevica mountain have started calling emergency numbers at 5 a.m. to report that the local river Brka is about to burst its banks.
Eventually, it did, flooding several homes and damaging several roads and causing small landslides, he said.
