There is no place for the glorification of war criminals and historical revisionism in any OSCE member state, Thomas Greminger, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), said in his message on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide that took place in this east Bosnian town in 1995, after it was overrun by Bosnian Serb Forces.

“Today, the world stands with you, the survivors and families of the victims, in solidarity and in sorrow, and humbly pay our respects to your loved ones. On behalf of the OSCE, I express our deepest condolences for your loss.

While this day is one of remembrance and mourning, it also is an opportunity to think about how to build a better future.

We are reminded of our responsibilities, as individuals, communities and nations, to speak out against intolerance, discrimination, prejudice and hate crimes wherever they may exist. These are the precursors to violence.

Justice is indispensable for rebuilding trust and reconciliation. Your suffering, and the suffering of all innocent civilian victims of the war, must be recognized. The findings and sentences of international and domestic courts must be respected. The denial of genocide and other war crimes, the glorification of war criminals, and historical revisionism have no place in any OSCE participating State.

Srebrenica today is an example of resilience, truth and justice for the world. Your memories are still painful and we are not blind to persistent problems and divisions in Srebrenica, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina at large. But after years of struggling, much has also been accomplished – in Srebrenica and beyond. We see that relations in the community can be mended, and that accountability for genocide and other war crimes is possible. The OSCE is proud to have played its part in these processes and we will continue our work, including through our office in Srebrenica.

Reconciliation will be achieved only if all communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina commit to building a peaceful, tolerant and inclusive future together. Regardless of ethnicity, religion or culture, the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina have more in common with each other than what divides them. Younger generations, in particular, have a strong role to play in realizing a better future.

In conclusion, I would like to tell you, the survivors and families of the victims, that I humbly admire your courage, strength and resilience in the face of this unspeakable tragedy. I wish you, and all of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, peace, prosperity and health” Greminger said in his video address.
