The Bosnian Serb member of the tripartite Presidency is asking for the Bosnian embassy to be moved to Jerusalem because he is trying to appease the US since he is on their blacklist, but all he is achieving is the creation of more tensions, the leader of one of the strongest Bosnian Serb opposition parties, Mirko Sarovic, told N1 on Tuesday.

Milorad Dodik announced on Monday he would send a request for the relocation of the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump revealed that Serbia agreed to do that, pursuant to an agreement signed by the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia in Washington.

Sarovic, an MP in Bosnia’s House of Representatives and the leader of the Serb Democratic Party (SDS), described Dodik as someone who “only functions normally when there are tensions.”

Dodik was blacklisted by the US in 2017, which determined that he “actively obstructed or who posed a significant risk of actively obstructing the 1995 General Framework Agreement for Peace”, the treaty that ended the war in Bosnia and contains the country’s Constitution.

Sarovic told N1 that he was also blacklisted by the US in the past, but that he would never use such issues as the developments regarding Israel to score political points in international relations.

“He is probably only trying to position himself as some important factor in an issue he can not live up to,” Sarovic said.

“What will he create with this? Nothing, only new tensions. This is something that will be talked about and that’s exactly what he needs. He knows how sensitive this topic is and it is so important that even the European Union cannot deal with it. He will create scenes in such an imperfect system as we have here and some might see him as a hero,” he said.
