The EU values democracy and equality among all citizens and their votes, former minister in the Swedish government, Bosnian-born Aida Hadzialic, tweeted in response to statements the leader of the main Bosnian Croat party recently made regarding Bosnia’s EU integration.

In an interview for Vecernji List, the leader of Bosnia’s Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH), Dragan Covic, said that a discussion on Bosnia’s EU candidate status will soon be on the table and that it will include changes to the country’s Constitution - something that will primarily be up to representatives of the three constitutional peoples to decide on.

"The European perspective means democracy, equality of citizens and their votes, respect for human rights and the international court in The Hague. The European perspective is not the denial of ethnic cleansing, genocide and the destruction of state institutions," Hadzialic posted on Twitter, in response to Covic’s statements.

Hadzialic left Bosnia and Herzegovina at age five during the war in the country. She was 27 years old when she became the youngest minister ever in the Government of Sweden.
