Bosnian high school students achieved a historic success at the International Mathematical Olympiad in St. Petersburg by winning five bronze medals, Second Gymnasium high school said Wednesday.
“This is a historic result for our country at the world's most prestigious math competition for high school students since 1993, when Bosnia first joined the IMO, because never in the past 27 years (since Bosnia's independence) has our team won so many medals,” Sarajevo's Second Gymnasium said in a statement adding that the event was held via videolink from 19th to 28th of September.
Bronze medals were won by Marko Vucic (Gymnasium Banja Luka), Faik Tahirovic (Second Gymnasium Sarajevo), Boris Stankovic (Second Gymnasium Sarajevo), Jovan Vukovic (Gymnasium Banja Luka) and Dejan Stankovic (High school Centre Foca). The sixth member of the team, Marko Jojic (Gymnasium Banja Luka), won praise. The leaders of the team were Bojan Pazin and Admir Besirevic. The Second Gymnasium said the team prepared for the Olympics at the Summer Camp for Gifted Mathematicians, organized by the Association of Mathematicians of the Sarajevo Canton.
After this success, Bosnian bronze boys also expect to compete at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad on November 1.
During last year's ‘Balkaniad’, Boris won silver, while Dejan and Marko Jojic won bronze, and for the rest of the team, this will be their first participation in that competition, the statement said.
