Environment and Tourism Ministry of Bosnia's Federation (FBiH) region positively evaluated a draft law banning the construction of small and mid-sized hydroelectric power plants on the region's territory, created by non-governmental organisations promoting the environment protection.
“Since the environmental protection is the core competency of this ministry and since we have excellent cooperation with the non-governmental sector, we believe that the draft law is exceptionally good and that everyone in the chain of competent institutions should support it in order to send it to the parliamentary procedure as soon as possible,” said the ministry, emphasising the importance of the law adoption.
Preserving the rivers is extremely important for the overall environment protection but also for the development of tourism, the ministry said, adding that the rivers are a natural wealth that has to be used in terms of tourism.
The statement comes amid intensified discussion on banning the construction of power plants on Bosnia's rivers, particularly in its FBiH region.
The subject triggered a reaction by Hollywood star and activist, Leonardo DiCaprio who called on the FBiH authorities to protect the country's rivers from the construction of such facilities.
