Rescue teams have ended their search activities of the collapsed buildings in Izmir after a strong earthquake that hit the Turkish city and neighboring regions last week.
“All search and rescue activities after the earthquake in Izmir have been completed. We are grateful to all the individuals who participated in them. We continue to work diligently on other earthquake remediation activities,” Mehmet Gulluoglu, head of the Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), said on Twitter.
The AFAD said Wednesday morning that 114 people had been killed and over a thousand injured in the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey's Aegean region. A total of 137 injured people were kept in the hospital.
An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale hit Izmir and neighboring regions on Friday, and 1,621 earthquakes were registered afterward in that region, 44 of which were stronger than four on the Richter scale.
Rescue teams rescued more than 105 people under the rubble, including three-year-old Elif Perincek, who was pulled out of the rubble after 65 hours, and four-year-old Ayda Gezgin, who was under the rubble for 91 hours.
