Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, will return to the donors the centuries-old Ukrainian icon he was presented as a gift by Bosnian Serb leader and Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency member Milorad Dodik earlier this week, the Russian media reported on Saturday.
The information was unveiled by Russia Today citing the RIA Novosti agency as a source.
The Russian agencies reported that the Christian Orthodox icon will be returned so that its provenance can be determined with the Interpol's assistance.
The event that caused controversies was assessed as a diplomatic scandal and sparked the attention of international media.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Bosnia asked the country's Foreign Ministry to provide detailed information on the origin of the Orthodox icon that, as the embassy claimed, belonged to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage.
Bosnia's State Prosecutor's Office said on Friday it formed a case regarding the 300-year-old gilded icon after Bosnian FM received the diplomatic note on the matter from the Ukrainian Embassy.
