Although most stayed home on Christmas Eve due to the coronavirus pandemic, the holiday spirit still can be felt in Sarajevo as many others decided to take a walk down the city’s centre and Old Town which were decorated for the holidays, as per tradition.
More people could be seen in the centre and the old part of the city on Thursday evening than in the previous nights – partly because it is much warmer and the air is not as polluted as usual in December and partly because it is Christmas Eve.
A small number of Catholics and other locals who want to share the joy of the holiday with their neighbours gathered in front of Sarajevo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral, entering and leaving in groups to attend the traditional Christmas Eve mass which is this year organised in accordance with anti-epidemic measures authorities introduced.
The traditional ‘midnight mass’ is taking place at 8 pm this year.
