Bosnia’s public is concerned with the situation and many people do not see a future in the country due to divisions in society which are the result of nationalist rhetoric of political leaders, Rusmir Mahmutcehajic, one of the intellectuals who signed a recent letter to US President Joe Biden asking him for help and support for solving burning issues that obstruct the country’s progress, told N1 on Tuesday.

The letter, sent to the White House in early March, asks Biden for “help and support in our efforts as citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina to extricate our country from political, cultural, and economic gridlock.”

Mahmutcehajic said that the public in Bosnia is in a state of “agony.”

“Most citizens are worried about the current situation, a large number of people do not see their future in a state of division, nationalist rhetoric,” he said.

Mahmutcehajic argued that Bosnia, as a plural society, “has all the prerequisites to become a good example with the development of liberal democracy; a society of happy people” but that maintaining divisions and spreading fear results in it being “a society that lags behind European trends.”

“The question of Bosnia and Herzegovina is clear: if it is not possible to sustain BiH’s pluralism, it would mean that such a world is also not possible. We, as authors of the letter, felt that we should raise our voices,” he said.

“We thought that the country that is the leader of liberal democracy is the right address for the first letter, as there will most likely be a series of letters addressed to international factors,” he announced.

The professor said that Bosnia’s pluralism and the possibility of a Bosnian state have been disputed for more than a hundred years, but that the conflict at the end of the 20th century proved that it can not be defeated.
