The President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for a two-day official visit, where he met with members of the BiH Presidency.
During a media address, the Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Denis Becirovic, highlighted that this was not the Albanian president's first visit to BiH this year.
“This is an opportunity to thank our Albanian friends for everything they have done for us. Albania is a strategic ally and friend of BiH, and it’s important for us to deepen these relations,” Becirovic said.
He further emphasized that Albania firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH.
“In this context, the previously announced opening of the embassy in our countries will strengthen diplomatic and other ties between our nations,” Becirovic added.
He also recalled that Albania was one of the co-sponsors of the Srebrenica Resolution.
Becirovic stressed that there is significant potential to enhance economic cooperation, particularly in boosting trade and connecting business leaders. In this regard, discussions included the possibility of opening a direct flight route between Sarajevo and Tirana to improve economic and tourism links.
Zeljka Cvijanovic, a member of the BiH Presidency, also pointed out that the visit was an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations.
“We have a political understanding on all matters,” Cvijanovic stated, quoting the Albanian President's view that “we should discuss things openly, even when we disagree.”
“President Begaj’s visit serves to present challenges but also to work towards a common goal. We are still far from the EU, and it is no secret that in BiH we struggle to reach consensus on key issues. However, we must improve our relations with our friends to achieve our shared goals,” she emphasized.
Cvijanovic also referred to NATO membership, reminding of BiH's ongoing cooperation with the Alliance.
Zeljko Komsic, the Croat member of the BiH Presidency, wished Albania success on its European path.
Albanian President Bajram Begaj underscored the importance of the long-standing friendship between BiH and Albania, highlighting its significance for both nations.
“We respect the territorial integrity of BiH and its path toward NATO. Albania will continue to support Bosnia and Herzegovina and will remain involved in the Althea mission. We also oppose any separatist activities. We are ready to cooperate on BiH’s European journey, which is the only alternative for the security and prosperity of our countries and citizens,” Begaj stated.
He added that Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania share a common future and need to strengthen both bilateral and regional cooperation.
