Ban on waste disposal at Mostar’s Uborak landfill raises public health concerns

The Federation entity’s Administration for Inspection Affairs has banned the disposal of mixed municipal waste at the “Uborak” landfill in northern Mostar, citing the absence of a valid environmental permit.

“The decision followed an inspection triggered by a complaint from the citizens’ initiative Because It Concerns Us,” landfill director Mirhad Grebovic told FENA. The ban took effect on September 1 and will remain in place until the necessary permit is issued.
With Uborak now effectively shut down, Mostar has been left without a functioning waste disposal site, raising concerns about potential risks to public health and the city’s daily operations.
In a statement, Because It Concerns Us said the decision validates long-standing warnings that the landfill has been operating illegally for years. The group noted that Uborak has been running without an environmental permit for six years, despite repeated complaints about harmful effects on nearby residents.

“The time has come to clearly say, enough. We expect urgent action from the competent prosecutor’s office and courts. This is proof that no one is above the law,” the initiative said in its statement.
