Bosnia's Central Election Commission (CIK BiH) confirmed and published the Mostar local election results, Tuesday, almost a month after they were held in this south Bosnian city.

The decision to confirm and announce the results of the local elections in Mostar which were held on December 20, 2020, was made at an emergency session after the BiH Court rejected three appeals (from the Social Democratic Party – SDP BiH, Our Party and Platform for Progress) for the recount of ballots at several polling stations as unfounded.

Six election watchdog members voted in favour of this decision while one was against it, the CIK BiH said.

Of the 35 representatives in the city council, 13 will be from Bosnia’s main Croat ethnic party, the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH).

The Coalition for Mostar, a group of parties including the main Bosniak ethnic party in the country, the Party for Democratic Action (SDA), will have 12 representatives in the council.

The left-leaning coalition BH Bloc will have six representatives, while the Croat Republican Party (HRS) will have three representatives.

The coalition of Serb ethnic parties, ‘Ostajte ovdje – zajedno za naš Mostar’ (Stay here – Together for our Mostar), will have one representative in the Council.

Mostar mayor will be elected indirectly, by councillors after the constitution of the new convocation of the City Council. The election of the mayor requires a two-thirds majority in the City Council, ie 24 councillors.

This was the first election Mostar had in 12 years.

In 2010, the Constitutional Court ruled parts of the Election Law for Mostar unconstitutional and parties that won the 2008 election, the HDZ BiH and the SDA, could not reach an agreement on how to amend it until last year.

They finally reached an agreement in June last year.
