Branislav Borenovic, a member of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), was physically attacked by two masked men in Banja Luka on Friday evening, and initial reactions to the incident point to a likely political motive.

Footage from security cameras, released by Borenovic himself, shows two men in hoodies rushing at him after he parked his car outside the building where he lives. They sprayed him with pepper spray, knocked him to the ground and then fled.

In a post on the social media platform X, Borenovic said the attackers muttered something before fleeing. He subsequently called the police and thanked both them and the doctors for their swift response.

The attack prompted a response from Drasko Stanivukovic, president of the opposition Party of Democratic Progress (PDP), of which Borenovic is a member.

"I trust that this case will be resolved as quickly as possible and that the perpetrators will be found and prosecuted," Stanivukovic wrote, while refraining from speculating on the possible motives of the attack.

However, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Our Party (NS), a member of the ruling coalition at the state level, issued statements.

The SDP warned that if political structures of the failing regime were behind the attack, it would be an additional alarm calling for concrete action. Meanwhile, NS suggested that the attack reflects the stoking of political tensions, hate speech and the ongoing targeting of opposition politicians by the Milorad Dodik regime and affiliated structures.

"This is a warning sign that we live in an atmosphere of growing political intolerance and violence, which is becoming normalised in Republika Srpska (RS), as seen in the attack on Nebojša Vukanović," the statement read.

Like Borenovic, Vukanovic, a member of the RS parliament, is a staunch critic of the Dodik-controlled authorities in the RS entity. In March, his car was set on fire outside his family home in Trebinje. The perpetrator was also caught on security cameras, but the police have not identified them yet.
