On 15 December 2025, the Croatian parliament adopted a law on the construction of a radioactive waste management centre at Trgovska Gora, near the Bosnian border, creating a legal basis for the long-term storage of low and intermediate level radioactive waste, including waste from the Krsko nuclear power plant, which Croatia co-owns with Slovenia.
Under the law, the facility is planned to be built at the former military site of Cerkezovac, subject to a mandatory environmental impact assessment prior to the start of construction.
In response to Croatia's decision, the BiH Presidency on Monday adopted a draft strategy to protect Bosnia's legal interests regarding the disposal of radioactive waste, outlining a series of steps to contest the project.
It tasked the Council of Ministers with taking urgent measures under international conventions and preparing analyses of the potential environmental consequences of the disposal site. The BiH Attorney's Office was advised to consider legal action, including initiating international legal proceedings or arbitration against Croatia.
The decision was unanimously adopted by all three members of the Presidency: Zeljko Komsic, Denis Becirovic and Zeljka Cvijanovic.
