The Zenica-Doboj Canton, which declared a measles epidemic on July 19, has recorded 1,402 cases this year, confirmed Health Minister Aida Salcinovic.
At the time when an epidemic was declared two weeks ago, this number was 1,209, indicating an increase of about 100 new cases per week.
“Most of the infections, more than half, have been recorded in Zenica, where the current number is 628. Kakanj follows with 471 cases, and Visoko with 200, while other towns and municipalities have significantly fewer cases,” said Minister Salcinovic.
Since the beginning of the year, Zavidovici has recorded 73 cases, Olovo 10, Vares eight, Zepce and Breza four each, and Tesanj and Usora two each.
“Currently, there are 10 patients hospitalized for measles in the Cantonal Hospital in Zenica, none of whom are in critical condition”, the minister said, noting that an increase in vaccinations has also been recorded following the declaration of the epidemic.
“Last week, we had 194 new vaccinations. We do not yet have the data for this week, but we hope the positive trend continues, and that the vaccination coverage will significantly exceed the current rate of just over 37 percent. Vaccination and herd immunity, which requires a 95 percent vaccination coverage, are the only sure ways to stop the epidemic and prevent severe consequences of this infection,” she stressed.
