Croatia's State Attorney-General Ivan Turudic paid an unannounced visit to Sarajevo on Tuesday to hold talks with his Bosnia and Herzegovina counterpart, Milanko Kajganic, about suspects who have fled their countries and are unavailable to the justice systems in the respective countries.
According to a press release issued by Bosnia and Herzegovina's office of the state attorney-general, Kajganic and Turudic discussed continuing cooperation in prosecuting war crimes, corruption, and organised crime.
“The focus of the meeting was placed on solving cases in which the suspects or defendants are beyond the reach of the authorities of the respective countries,” according to the press release.
The chief prosecutor of BiH's Serb entity, Zeljka Radovic, attended the meeting.
Croatia and BiH have signed an agreement on the extradition of defendants charged with offences such as organised crime and corruption. However, war crimes suspects are exempt, and this exemption makes it possible for them to exploit dual citizenship and run from the country in which they are accused or convicted to shun court proceedings or incarceration.
