Bosnia bids farewell to acting legend Josip Pejakovic at Bare Cemetery

A large crowd gathered Wednesday at Bare City Cemetery in Sarajevo to bid a final farewell to Josip Pejakovic, a towering figure of Bosnian and Herzegovinian arts and culture. The funeral brought together friends, admirers, and some of the country’s most prominent artists, all united in honouring the life and legacy of the celebrated actor, playwright, and cultural icon.

Among those in attendance were renowned names from the local arts scene, including Dino Merlin, Mladen Vojicic Tifa, and Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdic, alongside Hanka Paldum, Gradimir Gojer, Nihad Alibegovic, Emir Hadzihafizbegovic, Ivica Saric, Adin Hebib, Jasminka Sipka, Suki Planjanin, Tarik Dzinic, Faruk Hadzibegic, and Damir Imamovic. Some guests travelled from abroad to pay their final respects.
Pejakovic’s family had earlier invited the public to the funeral with a heartfelt message: “Josip has gone somewhere… he will smile one last time before he disappears into Bare.”

Josip Pejakovic passed away on Saturday at the age of 78, a fact confirmed by his son, Dejan Pejakovic.
Born in 1948 in Travnik, Pejakovic completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown before moving to Sarajevo, where he studied drama under Kaca Doric and Josip Lesic. He graduated with standout performances in Chekhov’s Three Sisters and Fernando Arrabal’s Concert in the Egg.
Over a distinguished career, Pejakovic played more than 50 roles at the Sarajevo National Theatre, appeared in landmark films such as The Human Factor and The House Next to the Road, and wrote and starred in numerous monodramas. His stage credits include Whom the Bell Tolls, The Cherry Orchard, The Brothers Karamazov, King Lear, Hamlet in the Village of Mrdusa Donja, and Long Day's Journey into Night, among many others.

VišeHe was awarded the Sarajevo Sixth of April Award in 1974, the ZAVNOBiH Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991, and the Award of the Association of Dramatic Artists of BiH.

A prolific writer, Pejakovic was the author of acclaimed monodramas and film scripts, including Oh Life, He Tells Me Bosnia Doesn’t Exist, and The House Next to the Road. From 2001 to 2003, he also served as Director of Drama at the National Theatre in Sarajevo.
On Wednesday, Bosnia and Herzegovina mourns not only a legendary performer, but a defender of culture and national identity, whose voice and presence will echo for generations.
