Bosnia Central Bank's foreign reserves climb to 18.09 billion marks as lending surges

Foreign exchange reserves of the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 18.09 billion KM (approx. €9.25 billion) at the end of February 2026, marking a 6.2 percent increase of 1.06 billion marks (approx. €541.97 million) compared to the previous year.

Total loans to domestic sectors amounted to 29.22 billion marks (approx. €14.94 billion) by late February, reflecting a monthly rise of 458.3 million marks (approx. €234.33 million) or 1.6 percent. According to the Central Bank, credit growth was driven by:

  • Non-financial private enterprises: Up 231.3 million marks (approx. €118.26 million) or 2 percent;
  • Government institutions: Up 127.6 million marks (approx. €65.24 million) or 8 percent.
  • Households: Up 122.7 million marks (approx. €62.74 million) or 0.8 percent.

Conversely, lending to non-financial public enterprises and other domestic sectors saw slight monthly declines. On an annual basis, the total loan growth rate stood at 12.1 percent, representing an increase of 3.15 billion marks (approx. €1.61 billion).

Deposit trends and household savings

Total deposits reached 37.47 billion marks (approx. €19.16 billion) by the end of February, a 0.4 percent monthly increase. Household deposits, which grew by 284.7 million marks (approx. €145.56 million) over the month, continue to lead the structure of domestic savings.

Within the household sector, transaction accounts represent the largest share at 50.8 percent, followed by term deposits at 29.2 percent and demand deposits at 20 percent.

The annual growth rate for total deposits was 10.8 percent, an increase of 3.65 billion marks (approx €1.87 billion). The household sector contributed significantly to this trend with an annual rise of 2.07 billion marks (approx €1.06 billion), while private enterprises and government institutions also recorded double-digit annual growth in their deposit holdings.
