Bosnia Grand Mufti warns politicians not to betray the trust they were given

Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community (IZ) in Bosnia and Herzegovina Husein Kavazovic spoke about the current public debate regarding the possibility of passing laws that could largely determine the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In an interview with MINA news agency, he warned the BiH politicians not to question Bosnia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and not to undermine the human rights enjoyed by all BiH citizens.

“We are encouraged by every indication of the possible progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the path of Euro-Atlantic integration, because the entire country and all its citizens can benefit from it. At the same time, no one, no matter who they are, can agree to an agreement on our behalf that will call into question the future of this country and the essence of our statehood. No one, no matter who they are, can cancel our vote, our will, or question our collective determination to protect and defend the state and its institutions in the most effective way possible. No one, no matter who they are, can question our safety. No one, no matter who they are, can ignore what Bosnia and Herzegovina is, an internationally recognized country, a member of the United Nations, supremated over its entities. No agreement must violate these axioms. Bosniaks must have guarantees that the genocide will not happen again and that they feel free and protected in every part of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said the Grand Mufti.

He explained that those in power are entrusted with three towers to take care of, namely state property, then political will, i.e. equal active and passive voting rights of all citizens, and equal rights for all peoples and citizens protected by the Constitutional Court through the supremacy, that is, the superiority of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms over the Constitution of BiH.

He also stated that the provision of Article II paragraph 2 of the BiH Constitution is clear and stipulates that the rights and freedoms provided for in the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and its protocols are directly applied in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Kavazovic noted that “these acts have priority over all other laws and the role and judgments of the European Court of Human Rights are clear, and the implementation of their words and spirit without rotten compromises is necessary for revitalizing the essence of BiH and strengthening its functional statehood.”

“Let no one dare, no matter who they are, betray these principles and trust. These are the red lines for all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina committed to its sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is no room for political games to play with the will of the majority of the citizens of this country. There is no political trade or political manoeuvring to justify this. This concerns us all! Of every citizen of BiH, especially those who experienced genocide and ethnic cleansing. Let no one sink into the darkness from which there is no return and let them not play with the future of their people and country,” Kavazovic said.
