Bosnian Muslims commemorated Martyrs' Day on the second day of Eid al-Fitr, with officials and religious leaders paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence.

Denis Becirovic, a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, visited the Kovaci Martyrs’ Cemetery in Sarajevo, where he expressed deep gratitude to those who defended the nation.

“Defending our homeland is a sacred duty. Unfortunately, we live in difficult times when Bosnia and Herzegovina's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity are once again under threat. A brutal attack on our constitutional order has not been stopped, and we must remain vigilant,” Becirovic stated.

He emphasized that separatist forces would be defeated, citing his recent legal actions: “In February and March, I submitted five requests to the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, all of which were accepted. We will defend Bosnia politically and legally, and all state institutions must fulfil their obligations. Law enforcement agencies must act responsibly. The system exists, the state exists, and those attacking it will ultimately be defeated.”

Becirovic also addressed the issue of fugitives freely travelling abroad, stressing that those responsible for enabling such actions must provide answers to the state or resign.

Earlier in the morning, official delegations visited the Kovaci cemetery, laying flowers at the grave of Alija Izetbegovic, the first President of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Husein Kavazovic, the Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, also attended the ceremony, stating that the gathering was an expression of deep respect for those who gave their lives for future generations.

“Even 30 years after the end of the armed aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, political attacks on our homeland have not subsided; instead, they are growing stronger almost daily,” Kavazovic warned.

He called for unity in preserving peace, dignity, and the rights of all Bosnians, regardless of religious or ethnic background.

“Similar attacks have always preceded suffering for all of us who live in this beautiful country. That should serve as a wake-up call, reminding us of our responsibility to defend the hard-won peace, which cost so many lives,” Kavazovic said.

He urged all citizens to protect peace, mutual respect, and the shared homeland of Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing that the country belongs to all—Muslims, Christians, Jews, and others alike.
