Bosnia and Herzegovina's ambassador to the United Nations, Zlatko Lagumdzija, emphasized in a statement to N1 that the country’s stance on Palestine reflects a consistent commitment to international law.
The UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution on Wednesday calling on Israel to end its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months. The resolution, proposed by Palestine, received widespread support, with 124 member states voting in favor, 14 voting against, and 43 abstaining.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, alongside Slovenia and Montenegro, was among the regional countries that voted in favour of the Resolution, reaffirming its principled stance on upholding international law and maintaining a consistent policy toward Palestine.
Lagumdzija expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting that BiH's position had been clear and unwavering from the beginning.
“Our position on Palestine and Gaza has been principled, precise, and consistent since October of last year when we first began voting on these issues. Throughout four votes since October 2023, Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with Slovenia, has remained steadfast, as the only two countries from Southeastern Europe to support all four resolutions,” Lagumdzija stated.
He also noted that while many countries had shifted their positions, European nations remained divided, which was evident during this vote as well.
“It’s natural that countries like Spain, Ireland, and Belgium from the ‘old Europe’ were consistent in their support, while many other countries, both within and outside the Schengen borders, continue to face divided opinions,” he added.
Lagumdzija highlighted Bosnia’s active role in the UN discussions over the past ten days since the resolution was scheduled for a vote, emphasizing the country’s experience over the past thirty years in navigating international diplomacy.
The UN General Assembly's vote underscored the international community's recognition of the importance of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through adherence to international law and respect for sovereignty.
