Senad Sejfic, a Bosniak returnee in the village of Gornja Kamenica, was attacked by several people near the local mosque on Sunday evening, and police detained two alleged perpetrators.
Sejfic was driving near the mosque when several vehicles came from the direction of Sekovic. The vehicles surrounded Sejfic's vehicle. Sejfic, who was wearing a seat belt, was then attacked. The attackers mostly targeted his head.
A local woman who saw what was happening started screaming and calling neighbours who came to Sejfic’s aid. The attackers then fled in the direction of Donja Kamenica.
Neighbours immediately took Sejfic to the police station in Zvornik and reported the case, after which two people were detained.
On Monday, the coalition of the parties Nasa stranka, SDP and NiP issued a joint statement, arguing that frequent attacks on Bosniaks in the country’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity are being encouraged by raising tensions caused by the leadership of the entity.
“Increasingly frequent attacks on returnees in the Bosnian entity Republika Srpska have been encouraged by the failure to solve cases of previous attacks and their impunity. Of particular concern is the fact that for months there has been no progress in the investigation into the attack on the Memisevic couple in Visegrad and the absence of an adequate reaction by the highest officials in the RS to the case in Zvornik in which a policemen beat a minor. We insist that the judicial and police authorities devote themselves to their work as soon as possible and to restore a sense of security in the returnees’ homes”, the statement says.
