Bosnian diaspora in the United Kingdom is urging the British government to support the proposed UN resolution on Srebrenica, according to a letter sent to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Diplomatic representatives from Rwanda and Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina's ambassador to the UN Zlatko Lagumdzija, and the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH Denis Becirovic have argued for the adoption of an International Day of Remembrance for the Srebrenica Genocide. The resolution condemns any attempt to deny the Srebrenica genocide and encourages efforts to bring perpetrators to international courts.

The resolution calls on all countries to fulfill their obligations under the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The letter notes that the resolution has gained support from a growing number of UN member states, including Chile, France, the United States, Turkey, Jordan, Albania, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, New Zealand, Ireland, and North Macedonia, among others. The proposed resolution is also supported by organizations such as Aegis Trust and the Kigali Genocide Museum, as well as by genocide scholars at academic institutions around the world.

The letter from the Bosnian diaspora in the UK argues that the resolution would be significant for survivors and families not only of the Srebrenica genocide, but also for those who have experienced mass atrocities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. The resolution would send a clear message that genocide cannot and will not go unpunished, which is especially important in current times. It would also challenge narratives of denial by strengthening the judgments of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

BH UK Network emphasizes that supporting the resolution would demonstrate the UK's commitment to preventing further victimization of survivors and their families through denial, while also supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina in fostering reconciliation and stability in the region. The resolution also encourages UN member states to adopt educational curricula that include lessons from the Srebrenica genocide, contributing to a better understanding of the consequences and prevention of genocide.

Given the current discussions in the UK on a proposed bill to establish genocide determination and the legal recognition of the Srebrenica genocide by the ICTY, the diaspora in the UK calls on the British government to co-sponsor the resolution to demonstrate support for justice and reconciliation.
