The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Montenegro has sharply condemned a "vandalistic act" after graffiti glorifying genocide and celebrating the convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic was sprayed on the building of the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in Podgorica.

The MFA described the "heinous and unacceptable act" as a direct assault, not only on the diplomatic mission of a friendly state but also on fundamental civilisational values, the culture of remembrance, and the dignity of the victims of the gravest crimes committed on European soil since the Second World War.

"Montenegro unequivocally condemns every attempt to deny or relativise the Srebrenica genocide, as well as the glorification of war crimes and their perpetrators," the Ministry stated.

Such actions, the MFA added, run contrary to Montenegro's policy of good-neighbourly relations and its commitment to contributing to regional reconciliation, stability, and lasting peace.

"The citizens of Montenegro cherish European values, and we view this act as something in stark contrast to the fundamental principles upon which our state rests," the statement asserted.

The Ministry reminded the public that the Montenegrin Parliament had previously adopted the Resolution on the Srebrenica Genocide. Furthermore, it noted that Montenegro unreservedly supported the UN General Assembly Resolution on Srebrenica in May last year, which, among other things, condemns acts glorifying individuals convicted by international courts for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, including those responsible for the Srebrenica genocide.

The MFA stated it expects the competent authorities to urgently identify and prosecute the perpetrators of the vandalism and to take all necessary measures to protect diplomatic-consular missions in accordance with Montenegro's international obligations.

Concluding the statement, the Ministry expressed full solidarity with the BiH embassy in Podgorica and BiH institutions, sending a strong message that there is "no place for hate speech, the glorification of crimes, and attacks on diplomatic missions in Montenegro."
