Hundreds of tractors and private vehicles were parked near the Gradiska Customs Terminal where farmers organised a protest on Monday over what they say is a lack of control regarding imports of products which their prices can not compete with.
Although the farmers announced that they would block the terminal, they opted not so on Monday.
Cattle farmers, fruit growers and dairy producers said they have produced a lot of fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products which they have nobody to sell to since their prices can not compete with those of the imported products.
“These were peaceful protests where they asked for reducing imports, increasing incentives and cheaper fuel prices. Vegetable growers said they had a lot of vegetables in stock and that they will, if the authorities don’t help them and they don’t sell it, bring the goods to Banja Luka and Sarajevo and leave them in front of the institutions because the authorities do not listen to their problems,” N1’s Andjelka Markovic reported.
The farmers were addressed by representatives of numerous associations who came from various parts of both of Bosnia’s two semi-autonomous entities, saying that everyone in the country is facing the same problems and that they should unite.
No incidents were reported at the protest and the farmers announced similar gatherings in the future. They also said that they would block about 15 customs terminals if authorities do not take any action.
