A photo of a Bosnian police officer pulling out the Croatian flag from the rubble in the quake-hit town Petrinja and putting it at a safe place has gone viral as Croatia is struggling to recover from the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit parts of the country late December.
“A police officer from Bosnia and Herzegovina seen in the ruins of the town of Petrinja (Croatia), which was completely destroyed by the quake, finds the flag of the Republic of Croatia and treats this symbol of the state with respect. Let's be humans! Great is the Bosnian heart!” said the photo caption of another police officer.
Samir Mirvic, the policeman in the photo, was part of the ‘Police to police’ operation, within which a police brigade form the Bosnian capital collected aid for their colleagues in Petrinja and Glina, two most-affected towns by the recent quake.
Croatian Interior Ministry sent a letter of thanks to their Sarajevo colleagues on Monday.
“With human casualties and enormous material damage in the affected areas, this unfortunate natural disaster has greatly hampered not only police work but also the daily lives of police officers personally affected by its consequences. Precisely for this reason, the knowledge that our colleagues, partners and friends from neighbouring BiH are with all of us in these difficult times, and especially the police officers who need help most at this time, gives us additional strength and motivation to overcome this disaster,” the Croatian police said.
