What happened at Capitol Hill in the United States this week represents the worst threat to democracy in America in modern times and it is still not over, former Bosnian ambassador to the United Nations, Muhamed Sacirbey, told N1 on Friday.

“It looked something like the former Yugoslavia before its breakup. Now some forces which are trying to help us remember what America was like and what it should be like are taking over the government,” Sacirbey said.

But according to him, the attack on democracy in the United States started long ago.

“I said this four or five years ago. Now, this has been proven and the attack is still ongoing. A lot of people feel responsible to stand against it. Some people don’t care for democracy, they don’t like it, they believe that it is an enemy of populism. The situation has still not been resolved,” he said.

Sacirbey alleged that there could have been police officers who cooperated with the pro-Trump protestors who stormed Capitol Hil.

“We need to consider that possibility. How easily this happened, how little preparation there was. We know that there are a large number of nationalists and right-wingers in the police, who are extremists and hide behind the uniforms of police officers. White nationalists believe that the police are their collaborator, they are not very afraid of the police,” he said.

There is an ultra-right-wing in every country, and this is also a reality for America and it is clear what that group wants, he said.

“Republicans are now completely divided. One side believes that this represents danger, the other side sees opportunity there,” he said.

The US tried to lead the world as a democratic state but the latest developments show that this is not realistic and that democracy can be endangered in the country, he said, stressing that “this is the biggest threat America has ever seen and it’s still not over.”
