Bosnia’s passport climbs to 47th place on 2025 Henley Index

This marks a significant step forward, placing Bosnia among the world’s top 50 most respected passports and underscoring both the reliability of its identification system and the growing international confidence in the country.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina’s position on the global passport ranking reflects more than just travel mobility, it demonstrates the level of trust other nations have in our institutions, documents, and security standards,” said Almir Badnjevic, Director of the Agency for Identification Documents, Registers and Data Exchange of Bosnia and Herzegovina (IDDEEA). “We continuously enhance our technological infrastructure, ensuring full alignment with European regulations and ICAO standards. Our biometric and digital identity systems already meet the highest benchmarks applied within the EU.”

The IDDEEA noted that the key driver behind new visa-free regimes and bilateral travel agreements, which directly impact Bosnia and Herzegovina’s ranking, is the ongoing work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for negotiating and signing international mobility accords.

“It is essential that technical security and diplomatic efforts work hand in hand,” Badnjevic added. “While the IDDEEA builds trust through document integrity and compliance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs opens doors through diplomacy. Together, we strengthen Bosnia and Herzegovina’s credibility and enable greater freedom of movement for our citizens.”

According to data from Henley & Partners, Bosnia and Herzegovina currently ranks behind 34 European nations, including all 26 EU member states, as well as 12 non-European countries. Still, it remains within the top 20 percent of passports worldwide, continuing a steady upward trajectory over the past five years.
