Brussels demands Balkan EU hopefuls cut MAGA ties

The warning carries profound implications for the Western Balkans, a region currently witnessing an intense convergence of American, Chinese, and European strategic maneuvers. The Trump administration has intensified its diplomatic and financial footprint across the region, highlighted by aggressive investment strategies. Notably, the Trump-linked firm AAFS is eyeing more than €2 billion of investments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Serbia has secured investment-exclusivity deals with the US aimed at constructing infrastructure projects like the Djerdap 3 hydropower plant with exclusively American firms.

Simultaneously, local political landscapes in the region are feeling the strain. In Albania, widespread protests have erupted over a controversial hotel resort project linked to Donald Trump’s family members within a protected wetland area. Meanwhile, Montenegro, long considered an accession frontrunner, has faced a surge of diplomatic courting by US officials eager to sway regional alignment.

Commissioner Kos emphasized that for the first time in history, the enlargement process faces active adversaries, singling out Russia alongside MAGA ideologists who propagate narratives that European civilization and democratic institutions are in systemic decline.

While contrasting this ideological pressure with Beijing's approach, which she characterized as economic positioning to secure a backdoor into the EU single market through candidate nations, Kos made it clear that Brussels expects prospective members in the Balkans to decisively reject external influences that challenge the union's core trajectory, Euractive reports.
