Canadian government: Honoring convicted war criminals is unacceptable

“Canada unequivocally condemns efforts to celebrate those responsible for genocide and other crimes. We stand with victims, survivors and their families,” the Genocide Research Institute Canada (IGC) said in a statement.

It added that the Canadian government strongly opposes any form of glorification or state or military honors for convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic in connection with his funeral in Belgrade in September 2026.

“Canada shares the views of its key Western and European allies. The government stresses that commemorating victims is essential to achieving justice and reconciliation, while public honors for perpetrators of genocide deeply undermine regional stability,” the statement said.
