As per tradition, the cannon on the Yellow Bastion overlooking Sarajevo fired on Monday for the first time this year, announcing the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
The cannon will be fired at about the same time every night throughout the month of Ramadan, letting the many Muslims in the city know that they can end their fasting for that day.
The Yellow Bastion, built during the Ottoman rule in the 18th century, is a popular gathering site for Sarajevo’s youth, but also for tourists.
Some locals gathered to witness the firing of the cannon, but not as many as usual due to the pandemic.
Among them was the new mayor, Benjamina Karic.
In his message to Bosnia’s Muslims, the Head of the country’s Islamic Community, Husein Kavazovic, said that “the pandemic is a test from Allah and we must accept it and search for the best way to overcome it.”
“Ramadan is a great opportunity for believers. It is a time when we can respond in the most beautiful way to the call of our Creator. Therefore, let us share what is good and strive for it to dominate our lives and our deeds,” he said, according to the MINA news agency.
