Cantonal Court convicts former BiH military police members for war crimes

Based on the evidence presented, the Court determined that during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the armed conflict between members of the Fifth Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the People’s Defense of the Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia, the convicted individuals, in their capacity as members of the military police of the I Brigade of the NO APZB, acted contrary to the rules of international humanitarian law and the provisions of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war. At that time, Senad Gracanin served as commander, while the others were military policemen of the same brigade.

The Cantonal Court sentenced Gracanin to five years in prison, Miljkovic to a combined sentence of four years and six months, Dizdarevic to three years, Samardzic to a combined sentence of four years, and Mustedanagic to three years in prison.

The Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office of the Una-Sana Canton stated that the Court, based on the evidence presented, established the responsibility of the accused for actions contrary to the rules of international humanitarian law and the provisions of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war.

''The case established that these individuals, as members of the military police of the I Brigade of the NO AP Western Bosnia, committed acts constituting violations of the laws of war and international conventions,'' emphasized the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office of the Una-Sana Canton.

The parties in the proceedings have the right to appeal to the Supreme Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina upon receipt of the written verdict.
