A commemorative event to mark the 32nd anniversary of the suffering of Bosniaks in Bratunac was commemorated in the eastern BiH town.
Family members of the victims, survivors, representatives of the local Islamic Community, representatives of associations and political representatives laid flowers at the city stadium in Bratunac and in the gymnasium of the elementary school “Branko Radicevic”, where Bosniaks were detained during the war. Flowers were also laid at the memorial site in the village of Repace.
At the Ljubovija Bridge, those gathered remembered the victims who, after being murdered, were thrown into the Drina River. The remains of many of them have not been found to this day. This is the location where the first killings of Bosniaks from Bratunac occurred in April 1992, according to TV Podrinje.
The commemoration was also attended by the U.S. Ambassador to BiH, Michael Murphy.
“Today, in Bratunac we pay respect to the Bosniak civilians, mostly women and children, killed by elements of the Republika Srpska Army in 1992.
Bratunac was the site of some of the most heinous war crimes and brutal mass ethnic cleansing during the war. To honour the memory of the victims and pave the way to a brighter future for Bosnia and Herzegovina, we all must promote reconciliation, respect, and tolerance,” the US Embassy posted on Twitter.
