Thirty years ago today, 68 Sarajevo citizens were killed and 142 wounded by a 120 mm mortar shell fired from a position of the Republika Srpska Army (VRS) at the Markale market, FENA news agency reported Monday.
Today, flowers will be laid on Markale and tributes will be paid to the fallen Sarajevo citizens. A joint commemorative session of the Sarajevo Canton (KS) Assembly, the Sarajevo City Council and the municipal councils of the KS area will also be held.
The KS Assembly proclaimed February 5 as the Day of Remembrance for all citizens of Sarajevo who were killed and wounded by the aggressors during the 1992-1995 siege.
The siege of Sarajevo began on April 5, 1992, and ended on February 29, 1996. It lasted 1,425 days. During the siege, 11,541 citizens of Sarajevo died, among them 1,601 children and over 50,000 civilians were lightly or seriously wounded. It is estimated that around 500,000 missiles were fired at the city during the siege. It was recorded that on July 22, 1993, a record 3,777 missiles were fired at the city. An average of 329 shells were fired at the city every day.
