The Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica was adopted with 84 votes in favour, 68 were "abstained", and the number of countries that voted "against" was 18, at Thursday's UN General Assembly session.
A total of 170 UN member states voted and those that were against the Resolution were: Antigua and Barbuda, Belarus, China, Comoros, Cuba, North Korea, Congo, Dominica, Eritrea, Eswatini, Grenada, Hungary, Mali, Nauru, Nicaragua, Russia, Sao Tome and Principe, Serbia and Syria.
The majority of UN member states have decided that in the future, July 11 will be marked as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica. The Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica approved July 11 in the same way that January 27 was designated as Holocaust Remembrance Day, and April 7 as the International Day of Remembrance on the Genocide of the Tutsi in 1994, in Rwanda.
The vote was preceded by a discussion of the member states who explained their positions depending on whether they were in favour, abstained or against.
The draft resolution was officially presented for the first time by Germany and Rwanda on April 18 at the UN building in New York.
