The amendments to the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina imposed by the High Representative Christian Schmidt are completely unnecessary and unacceptable for the representatives of the Croat National Assembly in BiH, Dragan Covic, the head of the HNS told Fena news agency.
He pointed out that these unprovoked reactions of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) come just a few days after positive reports from the EU towards BiH, where the positive results of the executive and legislative authorities in BiH were strongly emphasized. This decision, he added, completely negates that.
“Without any need, the High Representative imposed 114 changes to the Election Law, which nullifies all the positive effects on our European path. This imposition compromises all the previous positive effects of the parliamentary majority and calls into question their future joint work. The consequences of such impositions at this moment can be unfathomable for the integration perspectives and the European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Therefore, we call on the OHR and members of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) to review this decision and take a comprehensive look at its consequences,” Covic noted.
He added that the statements of political leaders regarding these imposed decisions are worrisome, from which one can clearly read a visible deviation from the common positions established so far, and what is worst, a clear division on an ethnic basis is visible.
“The imposition of this and any other law establishes a practice that renders meaningless the role of parliament and democratically elected representatives, which is the core of democracy. Therefore, we call on all power holders, regardless of their different opinions regarding the imposed decisions, that in accordance with the Constitution of BiH and the highest democratic standards, legitimately elected representatives make decisions and lead political processes in BiH,” Covic concluded.
