Bosnian Croat political leader Dragan Covic said on Wednesday that he is confident there will be no security threats in Bosnia and Herzegovina after prosecutors requested the detention of the president of BiH's Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Milorad Dodik.

Prosecutors asked the police to detain Dodik for failing to respond to a summons for questioning as part of an investigation into an alleged attempt to overthrow the constitutional order. Dodik and two other high-ranking officials from the Republika Srpska entity do not recognise the state court and prosecutor's office.

“I am confident that security will not be jeopardised in any way, and those who provoke or play with such fires will not have the absolute support of Croat representatives in any institution of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Covic told reporters.

When asked about Dodik's possible arrest, he said he supports the work of state institutions. “This order came from the prosecutor's office. There are five institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina that must be respected and acknowledged,” he emphasised, calling for de-escalation and dialogue.

Covic believes that the solution to the crisis should be sought exclusively by local politicians, with the support of the international community, while continuing work on the country's Euro-Atlantic integration.

“Right now, Bosnia and Herzegovina needs Euro-Atlantic integration, with the ambition of moving closer to the EU,” he stressed.
