The President of the Croat People's Assembly (HNS) of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dragan Covic, addressed the ongoing debate over the South Gas Interconnection pipeline during a statement in Vitez. He acknowledged the significant pressure surrounding the issue, noting that not everyone is equally equipped to handle such challenges.
“We reached an agreement on the legislation through the commission two or three days ago, and I fully expected it to be adopted at yesterday’s government session. However, there has been a delay. The pressure is immense—media, personal, party, and political—and not everyone can withstand it, as you can see. Nonetheless, we are pressing forward,” Covic stated.
Highlighting the pipeline’s importance, he described it as a cornerstone project for both Croats and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“There is no greater strategic interest for Croats in BiH—or for BiH itself—than this pipeline. However, its development must adhere to the principles of the Dayton Agreement, respecting the Constitution’s clear division of competencies. This is our stance, and we reject any covert arrangements designed for the benefit of others,” he said.
Covic underscored the long-term significance of the project, stressing the importance of careful decision-making.
“This is a project that will shape the next century. Mistakes made today could haunt us for the next 50 years. It is vital that we avoid such outcomes. Each representative must bear personal responsibility in this matter. We stand by our people and refuse to accept compromises that could undermine the future of this strategic initiative,” he affirmed.
When asked to comment on recent statements from the US Ambassador, Covic chose to refrain from offering any remarks.
