The leader of the strongest Bosnian Croat party in the country, Dragan Covic, explained that the reason representatives of his Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) voted down a proposal that would oblige BiH to follow and align with measures imposed by the EU on Russia due to aggression against Ukraine, was because it was submitted by the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Covic, who is the Speaker of Bosnia’s House of Peoples (HoP), stressed that his party has expressed support for the EU position on Ukraine and will continue to do so, but noted that his party has been consistently rejecting proposals coming from the opposition throughout the past three years.
“We, in principle, reject the amendments that come from the opposition parties, and that has been our practice for three years now,” Covic said, arguing that opposition parties use this to gain political points.
“There are clear rules on how the assembly works,” he said.
The House of Peoples (HoP) unanimously adopted a decision on Thursday to submit a request for granting candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina for EU membership and instructed the Council of Ministers to send this initiative to EU bodies. However, the HoP refused to consider the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Prevention of Conflicts of Interest as well as the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on the HJPC under an urgent and shortened procedure.
These reforms are among the 14 key priorities the EU defined for the country’s path towards membership.
