The mayor of Sokolac, Milovan Bjelica, published a statement dedicated to the convicted war criminal Radovan Karadzic, in which he glorifies him and also mentions war criminal Ratko Mladic. He said that, for him, Karadzic is “still the president of Republika Srpska”.

In the statement published on a web page which is considered the official page of the Municipality of Sokolac, Bjelica wrote, among other things:

“Radovan Karadzic is the first president of Republika Srpska. There is no need to add or insert the term ‘was’, he is that now and will be as long as the Republika Srpska exists. For me personally, he is still the President, because whenever I hear that word, I think of him first. Others now hold that office, an office he created”.

This prompted Ramo Isak, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the BiH’s Federation (FBiH) entity, to file a criminal complaint against Bjelica with the state Prosecutor's Office.

“The report was submitted in accordance with the Law on Criminal Procedure of Bosnia and Herzegovina and due to the existence of a well-founded suspicion that the Mayor of the Municipality of Sokolac Milovan Bjelica committed the criminal offense of “Inciting national, racial and religious hatred, discord and intolerance” with his publicly presented views, which is punishable according to the provisions of the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, stated Isak’s ministry.

Isak pointed out that the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina clearly states that anyone who in any way glorifies a person convicted by a final verdict of genocide, crime against humanity or war crime will be punished with a prison sentence of at least three years.
