President Zoran Milanovic on Wednesday held talks with the head of the Croatian National Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dragan Covic, on the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the consequences of holding elections in the country under the existing model for the status of BiH Croats.

Milanovic informed Covic of his initiative for Croatia to invest additional effort towards its partners in the EU and NATO in order to secure the right for BiH Croats to elect their own representatives to government bodies, the president's office said in a statement.

That Croats, as a constituent people in BiH, are again outvoted in elections, is unacceptable, Milanovic and Covic agreed.

Holding elections under the current law does not benefit the stabilisation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, they said.

Croatia will not stop advocating the rights and full equality of Croats in BiH, Milanovic said.

The Croatian president, who has asked that Croatia make conditional Finland and Sweden's entry to NATO on changes to the election law in BiH, on Wednesday proposed to PM Andrej Plenkovic to convene the National Security Council over BiH.

In a letter to Plenkovic, Milanovic said that if elections are held under the existing election law, “Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as one of the three constituent peoples, will lose equality and constitutional rights guaranteed by the Dayton Agreement.”

He also criticised partners in the EU and NATO for not having done almost anything for the BiH election law to be changed.

He said that Croatia supported its partners in the EU and NATO when their national interests were at stake but that they are not doing the same for Croatia.
