The vice-president of the European People's Party (EPP) and member of the Committee for Culture and Education of the European Parliament, Zeljana Zovko, organized a conference in the European Parliament on the historical significance and strategic importance of heritage under the protection of UNESCO in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The event took place on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the reconstructed Old Bridge in Mostar, which Zovko emphasized at the conference's opening, adding that the Old Bridge is a symbol of reconciliation.
“The very act of restoring that monument, which was a cultural monument, but was not a world heritage monument, the very act of reconstruction and the undertaking of UNESCO to begin its restoration with the participation of all three religious communities and all three peoples is a symbol of reconciliation and not a symbol of separation that some wanted to mark as a conflict between civilizations,” she stated.
Zovko expressed her satisfaction with the participation in the project of registering the Old Bridge as an ambassador to UNESCO, emphasizing that the restoration helped reconciliation in Mostar and in BiH and contributed to the unique value of the Old Bridge, which is crucial considering that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a strategic place for peace and security of the EU and its borders.
