The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Czech Parliament, Marketa Pekarova Adamova, visited the Potocari Memorial Center on Thursday to honour the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. She laid flowers at the memorial site and paid solemn tribute to the more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys murdered in July 1995.

Following the ceremony, Speaker Adamova met with representatives of the Association “Mothers of Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves.” Reflecting on her visit, she expressed profound emotion: “The experience of visiting the Potocari Memorial Center has deeply affected me. It leaves one almost speechless and my thoughts are focused on what must be done to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”

Munira Subasic, head of the “Mothers of Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves,” shared the challenges faced by survivors in their ongoing pursuit of justice and truth. “Ms Marketa Adamova gave us renewed strength to persist in our fight for truth and justice. She demonstrated a deep understanding of our pain and what it means to live for 30 years without our loved ones who were killed in the genocide. She called us heroines and assured us of her full support,” Subasic remarked.

Nermina Lakota, another member of the association, highlighted the ongoing struggle against genocide denial and the enduring pain of searching for the remains of loved ones. “I informed our esteemed guest from the Czech Republic that we are still searching for those who are missing. My father and brother were murdered during the genocide, and I have yet to find their remains,” said Lakota.

During her visit, Speaker Adamova toured the cemetery at the Memorial Center and explored the Museum of the Memorial Center in Potocari.
