The extreme weather events observed around the world are “very clearly” linked to the increased global temperature which is caused by human activity, Professor and Research Chair in Climate Science and Sustainability at Concordia University, Damon Matthews, told N1, adding that in order to respond to this, we need to “transform our global energy system.” Pročitaj više

Matthews was among the scientists who worked on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report which found human activity has caused an increase in global temperatures and warned that the effects of climate change could become irreversible if the world does not respond to it.

Matthews said that so far “we’ve now reached 1,1 to about 1,2 degrees (Celsius) above pre-industrial level temperatures” and that temperatures will continue to increase “as long as we continue to emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.”

“The fingerprint of climate change around the world is very clear, it’s consistent with scientific predictions, so we’re very much on track towards increasingly changing climate, increasingly dangerous climate conditions,” he said.

“If we want to meet the aims of the Paris agreement, we need to change the course of the future. We need to start bringing greenhouse gas emissions down to as close to zero as we can,” he added.

Heatwaves and Flooding and wildfire conditions are “very clearly linked to global average temperature” and as it keeps increasing, the severity and frequency of such weather events will also continue to increase, Matthews said.

Human-induced global warming is now affecting “every weather event on the planet in some way,” and while it can not be claimed with certainty that some weather events would not have happened if the global temperature was not increasing, “we do know that the type of events that we have been seeing are more likely and are becoming more common because global temperatures are increasing because of the influence we have on the planet,” he explained.

“We need to transform our global energy system and start producing energy without producing carbon dioxide. That is the primary goal,” he stressed.
