Divisions deepen over selection and power of new High Representative in Bosnia

According to Bloomberg, the United States and Italy support the appointment of Antonio Zanardi Landi, an experienced Italian diplomat who has previously held major diplomatic posts, including roles in Moscow and the Vatican. He is being backed to succeed German diplomat Christian Schmidt, who suddenly resigned last month. France, on the other hand, is proposing its own candidate for the position, René Troccaz.

Bloomberg states that the United States desires a "lighter" form of governance within the Office of the High Representative, an institution that holds broad powers in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This approach is opposed by France and other countries.

Sources told Bloomberg that the talks are complex. Some interlocutors suggested that negotiations could take longer, or that the involved nations might have to reach a temporary agreement if they fail to align by Thursday, when a decision from the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) is expected.

The Italian government did not respond to Bloomberg's request for comment. A French official stated that it is normal for discussions regarding a new High Representative to take place, but emphasized that there are no tensions between France and Italy, adding that both nations share the same vision regarding the implementation of the High Representative's mandate.

The United States Embassy in Sarajevo declined to comment on the allegations and referred inquiries to the State Department, which did not immediately respond to Bloomberg.
