Milorad Dodik, the informal Bosnian Serb leader, on Monday welcomed US President Donald Trump's remarks about the unification of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, calling them confirmation of peoples' right to self-determination.

"President Trump in Dublin once again showed that great statesmen change the world by having the courage to understand others," Dodik wrote on X, praising Trump for "not dividing peoples" but encouraging them to believe in themselves and their right to sovereignty and freedom. He called Trump's desire for a united Ireland "visionary" and consistent with the right to self-determination.

During his visit to Dublin, Trump said he would "love to see" a united Ireland, saying it was "going to happen eventually" and "may as well happen now". He called unification "a fantastic thing", while noting that "the UK will have something to say about it, obviously."

Dodik criticised British policy, accusing London of having "encouraged divisions, sown hatred and intolerance" in the Balkans and saying he was particularly pleased that London was "no longer a global power".

In a second X post ahead of 15 September, Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag Day, Dodik reiterated that there was no border between Serbs in Serbia and Republika Srpska, the Serb entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He said the Drina River had never been a border between people sharing the same faith, language, history and collective memory, and that "Serbia and Republika Srpska breathe and live as one". He praised Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic for respecting administrative boundaries without turning them into "walls between Serbs".

Dodik has for years advocated unification of Republika Srpska and Serbia, calling it the Serb people's "historic goal" in July last year.
