The recording of Milorad Dodik, the President of Bosnia's Republika Srpska (RS) entity, before his guest appearance on RTS caused a storm of reactions after he used a racial slur when speaking about the Novak Djokovic family before going on the air.
According to the video published by RS MP Nebojca Vukanovic Dodik insults the Djokovic family in a conversation with journalist Gradimir Papic.
“Though, I can tell you, these Djokovics are some hard motherf****rs, ugh… Our people experience it emotionally, but when you get into business ufff… [They’re] as tight as gipsies, I can tell you…” Dodik said.
The gipsy reference is a regional racial slur which means someone is a miser.
”It seems that we wasted 50 million Bosnian marks [some €25 million] on the Spska Open tennis tournament and the arrival of Novak Djokovic in Banja Luka because Milorad Dodik insulted Djokovic so hard tonight that I believe he will not come to Banja Luka or Republika Srpska for a long time. He was obviously careless and said all kinds of things in the RTS studio before the show, so someone in the director's office recorded it and made an effort to get it on the air.” Vukanovic wrote on his fan page adding:
“While Novak Djokovic and his family were in Banja Luka, Dodik wouldn’t leave them alone and when the tournament ended, it turned out that not everything was as the cameras of the regime media wanted to show. It remains to be seen how Novak Djokovic and his family will react to Milorad Dodik's insults, but it is certain that this year was the first and last tennis tournament in Banja Luka, and that Dodik and Drasko [Stanivukovic, the Mayor of Banja Luka] threw away 50 million marks of people’s money to take a couple of photos and get political points, and when the lights went out not everyone was satisfied with the distribution of loot and public money.”
RS President Milorad Dodik responded to the video saying he had a sleepless night and thanked the RTS for their “unprofessional” conduct.
“I am sorry that I experienced disappointment in RTS on this occasion. I will continue to respect and appreciate the success of the one and only Novak Djokovic and to respect and appreciate his family as before. We will finalize all arrangements regarding the ‘Srpska Open’ tournament. I am glad that I got to know the managerial and leadership skills of Djordje Djokovic [Novak’s brother] and I remain very grateful for the fact that this year's tournament was held in Banja Luka.
I apologize if the speculative display on social networks hurt members of the Djokovic family. It hurt me, as well. I’d like to thank RTS for my sleepless night. I can't believe they did this in such a heinous way. As a sincere admirer of Novak Djokovic both as a tennis player and as a man, I wish him and his family all the luck. Success in everything to Srdjan [Novak’s father] and Djordje,” said Dodik.
The Serbian state TV said the recording made just before Dodik’s apperance on its OKO talk show was illegally published and called on the Serbian Interior Ministry and Security Intelligence Agency (BIA) to conduct an investigation.
The RTS said on its website that a part of the informal conversation prior to the beginning of the OKO talk show on April 25 was illegally releases from its system due to a gross technical error.
