Noel Curran, Director General of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), sent a letter to FBiH Prime Minister Nermin Niksic and BiH Ministers Edin Forto and Elmedin Konakovic, asking them to help solve the problem of financing the Public Service Media BHRT.

”On behalf of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the leading European alliance of public media services, I am addressing you with concern regarding serious threats to the future of our member BHRT. We understand the complexity of the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the long-standing difficulties that BHRT faces in connection with the collection of funds that are owed and belong to it. However, we must be able to urgently find a long-term solution to BHRT's funding problems,” Curran stated in the letter.

The public media service has an irreplaceable role in society in promoting democratic debate, supporting social cohesion, and strengthening public morale in difficult times. To fulfil this role, an adequate and stable budget is necessary, he added.

”Please help find a sustainable solution to BHRT's funding problems and protect its future. The laws passed by the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirm that the state is responsible for ensuring sustainable financing and independent work of broadcasters. We are ready to contribute to debate at the national level and help find solutions to the complex funding situation. In times when access to reliable news and information is crucial, we must do everything in our power to protect and preserve the work of public services like BHRT and I trust your support in this matter,” he said in the letter.
